Northrop Grumman Marine Systems, a historical campus in Sunnyvale, CA, specializes in the development, manufacturing, assembly and testing of missile launching and handling systems, propulsion and power generation systems for naval surface ships and submarines. Our products are built nowhere else in the country.

We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our team that will specialize in facilitating execution of process readiness reviews. You will support the manufacturing of various product lines within marine propulsion and power generation systems and missile launch and handling systems. The scope will include working on various manufacturing processes for high-value gearing and steam turbine assemblies, launch tubes, eject systems, machined components and welded fabrications. As part of this role, you will utilize proven industry and internal company methods to review the maturity and failure risk of new and existing processes while working with peer subject matter manufacturing engineering experts to focus on mistake proofing and implement the necessary process controls to ensure robust and repeatable, high yield processes.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Facilitate and assist in the execution of: Product Manufacturing Readiness Assessments and Reviews, and detailed Process Readiness Reviews at the subsystem and/or component levels.

  • Utilize process analysis tools and techniques such as, but not limited to, Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Cause and Effect Diagrams (Ishikawa/Fishbone), defining Key Process Input and Output Variables and creating Process Control Plans to ensure robust processes are in place.

  • Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and systems to reduce cost, improve sustainability and develop best practices within the manufacturing environment.

  • Assist in the develop of new processes, improvement of existing manufacturing processes, and development of the required tooling and fixtures with an excellent team of experienced assembly mechanics, machinists, welders and engineers.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and implementation of new capital equipment for establishing expanded production processes.

The ability to support multiple production shifts is required (first, second, third shifts, and weekends) based on the assignment and current and future production schedules.

This position can be filled at a Principal or Senior Principal level.

Basic Qualifications:

For a Principal Manufacturing Engineer (Welding):

  • Bachelors in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology Engineering or Math) with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or Masters Degree in a STEM discipline with3+ years of relevant work experience

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance

For a Senior Principal Manufacturing Engineer (Welding):

  • Bachelors in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology Engineering or Math) with 9+ years of relevant work experience, or Masters Degree in a STEM discipline with 7+ years of relevant work experience

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings

  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to propulsion and power plant machinery

  • Exposure or specialization in any or all of the following: welding, machining and/or mechanical assembly processes

  • Experience leading technical projects requiring project planning, scheduling, resource identification and financial management

  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certified
