Northrop Grumman Marine Systems is seeking a talented Metrology Engineer to join our team in Sunnyvale, CA.

The Metrology Engineer develops and evaluates metrology calibration systems that measure characteristics of objects, substances, or phenomena, such as length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity, and derived units of physical or chemical measure. Identifies magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms. Develops calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems and accuracy and precision requirements.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Research, develop, publish and update controlled calibration procedures.

  • Assist calibration technicians with measurement processes and selection of adequate calibration standards.

  • Assess risk and provide analysis concerning calibration extensions.

  • Support technical compliance to NGMS Calibration Command Media with attention to in-house calibration laboratory capabilities and external calibration service suppliers.

  • Coordinate calibration services with external suppliers.

  • Evaluate out-of-tolerance situations to ensure appropriate steps are taken.

  • Act as lead equipment recall administrator for the calibration lab.

  • Assist Quality Compliance with technical aspects of internal Metrology self-audits.

  • Perform special projects as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • The candidate must possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor's degree in a related STEM field and 2+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in a related technical field and 0+ years of relevant experience.

  • The ability to obtain a Secret clearance (US Citizenship required).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • US Armed Forces PMEL or TDME MOS veteran - or ASQ Certified Calibration Technician (CCT or CQE).

  • Experience with laboratory compliance to ANSI/NCSL-Z540 and/or ISO-17025 industry standards.

  • Strong emphasis in electromechanical and dimensional measurements; Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T); as well as temperature & pressure parameters.

  • Understanding and application of measurement uncertainty and Test Uncertainty Rations (TUR's).

  • Experience with some form of automated calibration procedures (e.g., SureCal, METCAL) and calibration maintenance/asset management system databases (e.g., MET/TEAM, TEAMMS, EMX)

  • Exposure to wider calibration industry through conferences or memberships such as ASQ, MSC, or NCSLi is favorable.
