Northrop Grumman Marine Systems, a historical campus in Sunnyvale, CA, specializes in the development, manufacturing, assembly and testing of missile launching and handling systems, propulsion and power generation systems for naval surface ships and submarines. Our products are built nowhere else in the country. We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer 3 to join our team. this individual will provide technical direction and support for Operations in areas of welding, fabrication, machining (controls) and heat treatment. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Troubleshoot complex manufacturing issues, improve existing manufacturing processes, and develop new processes, to include equipment, tooling and fixtures

  • Qualify welding procedures, prepare engineering documentation and instructions to support shop fabrications per industrial and military standards

  • Assist shop personnel in the interpretation and implementation of drawing requirements

  • Develop instructional material for the training and certification of new or existing manufacturing processes

  • Provide input to Design Engineering to ensure that designs are optimized for manufacturing and meet all requirements of the contract specifications

  • Lead new product integration (NPI) from concept to production including but not limited to: Process definition, manufacturing flow, process prove out, capability studies, manufacturing instructions, operator training, and final integration and process acceptance.

  • Support estimating activities for new or existing products as required and work with suppliers to resolve problems and meet incoming material and process requirements

The qualified candidate must have a strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of technical principles and theories and a general knowledge of mechanical engineering and manufacturing processes. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practical and consistent with organizational objectives. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, able to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast paced and highly technical environment. May be required to work weekends and off shifts to support manufacturing.



Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 5+ years of relevant work experience, or Masters degree in a STEM discipline with 3+ years of relevant work experience

  • Exposure to welding and/or welding engineering

  • Exposure to basic machining techniques

  • Ability to read mechanical drawings

  • Exposure and understanding of basic Geometric Dimensions and Tolerance

  • Ability to develop and maintain detailed work instructions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required as applicants may be subject to a government security investigation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with any of the following: GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW, Brazing, Plasma and Oxy fuel cutting Experience with the implementation of military (or commercial equivalent) welding standards

  • Knowledge of electron beam welding and programing parameters

  • Experience using CAD/CAM applications

  • Exposure to NPI (New Process Introduction in a manufacturing relevant environment)

  • Work experience with ship building or marine machinery

  • Knowledge of steam powered propulsion and power generation system design and fabrication

  • Experience with SAP or similar MRP/MES systems

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Work experience with Represented Union Personnel

  • Understanding Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma

  • MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
