Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems is seeking a Structural Analysis Engineer 3 to work in Redondo Beach, California.

This position is for a Structural Analysis Engineer 3 to support space systems applications. The candidate will join the Vehicle Structures department in Redondo Beach, CA. As a structural analysis engineer the candidate will support Spacecraft programs and Advanced Technologies. The candidate will perform structural analysis for space based platforms and missions. He/she will be responsible for providing solutions to a variety of structural related technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. The candidate will be required to coordinate with other engineering disciplines for analysis inputs and design implementation details, document stress analyses and report results to internal and external customers when necessary. The position requires extensive experience in Metallic Structural Analysis. Experience in Composite Structural Analysis is also highly desirable.

Essential Functions

  • Finite element analysis of spacecraft primary and secondary structures

  • Collaboration with design engineers to ensure structural integrity

  • Performance of detailed stress analysis using classical hand analysis and FEA

  • Development of FEA models for structural analysis

  • Analysis of Bolted and Bonded Joints

  • Design criteria and analysis methodology development

  • Extraction of internal loads and free body loads from FEA loads models

  • Calculation of margins of safety on primary and secondary structure

  • Analysis of fittings and fasteners

  • Interaction with internal and external customers

  • Support drawing analysis review and sign-off

  • Documentation of analysis results, methods and calculations

  • Presentation of results at PDR/CDR meetings and Internal Design Reviews

  • Mentorship for junior engineers

  • Support of structural testing including pre-test analysis, sensor selection and installation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and5 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment OR

  • Masters of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and3 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment

  • Extended working knowledge of stiffness analysis, strength analysis, thermal distortion analysis, durability analysis, and FEA

  • Complete understanding of stress analysis techniques, concepts and practices

  • Extended work experience using industry standard structural analysis software (NASTRAN, PATRAN, FEMAP, MATHCAD, etc.)

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an In-Scope DoD Secret Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters' Degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering

  • Extensive knowledge of Federal Acquisition Regulations and proficiency in MS Office suite, property Working knowledge of NASTRAN DMAP and LTM generation

  • Working knowledge CAD application (CATIA / NX) is desirable

  • Participation in multiple design and analysis cycles in spacecraft development programs is desirable

  • Composite layup definition and composite laminate analysis

  • Possesses strong leadership qualities, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills
