Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Principal Vehicle Performance & Sizing Design Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be at Northrop Grumman's South Bay Center of Excellence (COE) located in Redondo Beach, CA.
The Sr. Principal Vehicle Performance & Sizing Design Engineer will possess a strong background and experience in conceptual / preliminary aircraft design, and advanced level of knowledge in the areas of vehicle performance and analysis, air vehicle sizing, Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO), mission and point performance, takeoff/landing, carrier suitability. The selected individual will be well versed in core Flight Science disciplines including aerodynamics, configuration, propulsion, CFD, and mass properties.
The selected candidate will conduct preliminary design synthesis and analysis of advanced subsonic, supersonic and/or hypersonic manned and unmanned air vehicles demonstrating extensive technical expertise and full knowledge of other related disciplines. Tasks may include takeoff/landing, mission and point performance characteristics of candidate aircraft designs as well as design synthesis and optimization of vehicles to meet operational requirements for vehicles from multiple organizations such as Air Force, Navy, DARPA and others.
Conduct vehicle sizing and performance trade studies to define and evaluate advanced concepts, identify technology requirements, perform parametric trade studies and provide design guidance to the other team disciplines.
Perform multi-disciplined optimization (MDAO) trades on air vehicle designs
Develop technical solutions to complex problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
Provide analysis, guide design teams to execute program goals, support proposal and business development activities.
Interact and brief external customers, as well as serve as a technical lead.
Help develop tools to improve capabilities and efficiency, and apply Agile techniques in all processes.
Conduct competitive vehicle performance assessments of current U.S. and foreign inventory designs, as well as flight-test data analysis and correlations to performance models.
The selected candidate should thrive in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations, significantly diverse assignments, collaborative/team settings across all levels.
Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 9 years of STEM related engineering experience, or a Master's Degree in a STEM discipline and 7 years of experience or a STEM PhD with 4 years of experience.
Experience with MATLAB, Python, C++, ModelCenter, Linux and/or FORTRAN
Experience analyzing air vehicle, missile, hypersonic vehicle performance
Experience with conceptual air vehicle sizing analysis
A current active in-scope DoD Secret security clearance or higher is required to start, with the ability to obtain and maintain the clearance and Special Program Access (PAR/SAP).
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering preferred.
Experience in Vehicle Performance and Sizing of advanced air vehicles, including Low Observable aircraft.
Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to interface with all levels of employees and management.
Five (5) years working experience with Open MDAO and/or Model Center.
Experience with (MDO) Multi-disciplined optimization methods.
Experience with Matlab, Python, Linux, FORTRAN, ModelCenter as well as a strong interest in computational methods is preferred.
