Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals and maintain our world class capabilities in a dynamic environment. This position will be located in Redondo Beach CA.
This position is defined as a Principal Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) design engineer. MGSE is used to support the integration, test and launch of spacecraft. The candidate will support the design modeling and drawing efforts utilizing CATIA. In particular, the Engineer will create or update layout drawings, fabrication drawings and engineering change orders, give design review presentations and perform some fundamental types of analysis (e.g. strength of materials).
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Design, develop, & analyze mechanical equipment used for space systems integration & test
Support Integration and Test (I&T) operations on the high bay floor as related to Mechanical Ground Support Equipment usage and processing
Fabrication engineering liaison support
Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution plus 5 years of engineering experience OR Masters of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution plus 3 years of engineering experience.
Experience with design modeling and drawing efforts using 3-D CAD modeling tools such as CATIA
Candidate must have, and be able to maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances: Department of Defense Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years OR SCI Access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years OR Department of Energy Q clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years.
Masters' Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Previous experience in Mechanical Ground Support Equipment design, fabrication, and proof load testing
Experience in structural analysis using hand-calculations and Finite Element Methods
