The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under Dept. of Defense Instruction 1322.1322.29. NG-MIP program is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members .

Responsibilities for this internship position are:

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) has developed the Northrop Grumman – Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge) utilizing the DoDI guidance for SkillBridge. During this program the service member will be on-site at his or her host company performing an individual internship in an entry to mid-level career type role. The service member will be on the job training supporting a work schedule equivalent to 40hrs per week. Outlined below are the Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes for the program.

Goals – Provide transitioning service members fellowship-style job skills training during the last portion(s) of their military commitment. This program is specifically designed to offer internships that result in the potential to transition to a full-time opportunity as the conclusion of the training. Interns will serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into NGC.

Objectives - Service Members who complete the Intern program will be highly trained, capable, future employees that align to the specific needs of the organization and are prepared to meet the NG mission “Defining Possible” on Day 1. This program provides a comprehensive internship experience including professional development, networking with leadership, and training specifically focused on NG leadership principles, company history, customer/stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.

DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty

  • Is within 12 months of separation or retirement

  • Will receive an honorable discharge

  • Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS

  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship.

Job Description:

GCCS-J is the Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Command and Control (C2) system of record. GCCS-J supports commanders and warfighters as they conduct joint and multinational operations by providing a fused picture of the battlespace within an integrated system that is supporting Joint Warfighter needs today. GCCS-J is focused on meeting emerging operational needs through sustainment and synchronization support to operational baselines (Global, Joint Operations Planning and Execution System (JOPES) and three product areas (Situational Awareness, Infrastructure, and Intelligence). Along with sustainment and synchronization, GCCS-J will focus on modifying and enhancing elements or capabilities to implement new requirements, enhance functionality, increase efficiency, or lower operating/deployment costs incorporating agile technologies and capabilities.

This position requires in-depth knowledge of the entire software development life-cycle. The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Exhibit a positive attitude, a high level of initiative, and must enjoy the challenge of bringing structured notional software solutions to ill-defined environments

  • Prioritize activities and deliver projects on time and within budget

  • Interface with multiple, geographically disbursed development teams and effectively communicate project statuses and barriers

  • Follow Agile Development process and full life cycle development: requirements, design, implementation, test, and maintenance

  • Lead independent technical investigations, provide technical advice, recommend technical solutions, and assists the Government in integrating the GCCS-J functionality into new baselines

  • Exhibit attention to detail coupled with the ability to quickly learn new procedures with minimal supervision

Basic Qualifications for Level 2:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) (STEM) with a focus on software development, software life-cycle, and agile development, or related work experience with 2 years experience.

Basic Qualifications for Level 3:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) (STEM) with a focus on software development, software life-cycle, and agile development, or related work experience with 5 years experience.

  • All other basic qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Java and Object-Oriented Design and Programming

  • Proficient in one or more build ecosystems, such as Maven

  • Ability to contribute to the development of software documentation

  • Ability to perform Unit Testing and an understanding of the concepts for developing software test plans and procedures

  • Ability to review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices

  • Ability to analyze static code analysis results and provide recommendations for remediation

  • Knowledge of full software lifecycle and agile development methodologies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to operate in a team environment.

  • Ability to travel as necessary (10% of the time)

  • US citizen with a final Secret clearance

  • Meets DoD SkillBridge qualifications as per DODI 1322.29

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with various programming languages (e.g., C, C++, C#, .NET, Python, Perl, Ansible, and JavaScript)

  • Experience with popular programming frameworks (e.g., Spring, Vue.js)

  • Experience with various IDEs, code repository software (e.g., git), software project management and collaboration solutions (e.g., JIRA) and automated frameworks (e.g., Jenkins)

  • Experience with employing industry accepted programming constructs/practices (e.g., thread pools, abstract class implementations, unit testing, concurrency)

  • Experience with cross-platform management (Windows and Unix/Linux data exchange)

  • Experience with virtual machine environments

  • Experience with Open Container Initiative (OCI) containerized application development

  • Understanding of test-driven software development

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps

  • Familiarity with automated testing and test tools

  • Familiarity with running performance tests and debugging techniques

  • Familiarity with database design/structures

  • Familiarity with Command and Control (C2) Systems

  • Familiarity with container orchestration tools and techniques (e.g. Kubernetes, helm)

  • Familiarity with Application Security and Development Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG)

  • Understanding of networking and network troubleshooting

  • Knowledge of the Atlassian Suite (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, etc.)

  • Linux and Windows System Administration skills

  • Ability to apply mathematical and statistical operations towards software algorithms

  • Background in military intelligence and imagery, or strategic planning

  • Top Secret / SCI clearance

Salary Range: $79,300 - $118,900

Salary Range 2: $97,500 - $146,300

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
