Northrop Grumman is currently looking for a Ordnance Design Engineer to work in our Bacchus (Magna) or Promontory, UT location.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The Ordnance Design Engineer is responsible for the development, qualification, and sustainment of energetic and pyrotechnic systems, sub-systems, and components for propulsion elements within our major launch vehicle and missile systems. The Design Engineer will be responsible for developing new systems and system upgrades by managing supplier requirements and integrated changes in a disciplined, broad reaching process, to ensure our propulsion systems perform to specification and satisfy every customer need.

Within Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Ordnance Design Engineering, provides a gateway to many other opportunities and could include project engineering, systems engineering, and engineering management.

Job Duties:

  • Analyze the needs of the system and translate into verifiable performance and design requirements to be flowed to ordnance suppliers.

  • Manage the technical elements of qualifying and maintaining energetic hardware.

  • Determine qualification methodology and approach.

  • Evaluate results of verification processes and validate results against system requirements

  • Integrate customer directed changes into the system and facilitate implementation of changes within a change management system.

  • Create and Manage Change Requests, Drawing updates, and other related engineering command media.

  • Work with the project Chief Engineer, Program Manager, and other supporting organizations Quality, DCMA, DD&I, to service the needs of operations and our customers.

  • Coordinate and communicate with all stakeholders, including customers, all things related to ordnance.

Skills & Qualifications :

  • Understanding of requirements and basic principles of verification approach

  • Ability and skills to work multidiscipline engineering problems

  • A thorough knowledge of engineering methods, principals, and tools in common use in the aerospace & defense industry today.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience preferred. Working in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field in CAD/PAD, Military Ordnance, or Launch Vehicle energetic devices including:

  • o FCDCA, FCDCM, FCDCIo CDF, CDFI, CDFMo Electro Explosive Devices (EED)o Initiators and Detonatorso Shape Charges (LSC & Conical)o Cable Cutterso Pyrotechnic Time Delayso Pin Pullers & Pin Pusherso Lanyard Pull Initiatorso Space Release Mechanisms (energetic & non-energetic)o Military Aircraft CAD/PAD deviceso Thermal Batterieso Pressure Cartridgeso Thrusterso Rocket Motor Ignition Safe & Arm Deviceso Vehicle Staging & Separation Mechanisms (Frangible Joints, LSC)o etc.

  • Booster Separation Bolts

  • Demonstrated experience in many aspects of aerospace design development processes including design, analysis, testing and integrationo Thermal Cycleo Vibration Testingo Thermal Vacuumo Shock Testing (Pyro, Shaker, MIPS)o Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI)o HERO (Hazard of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance) testing

  • Assembling plans and detailed schedules to accomplish an engineering effort

  • Product testing or validation testing, preferably system level tests demonstrating interaction between subsystems or major elements

  • Participation in developing formal interfaces between parts of a system

  • Familiarity of requirement sets and system architectural approach necessary for spaceflight systems (ordnance, high reliability electronics, thrust vector control, flight safety systems)

  • Exposure and familiarity to a requirements management database tool or other systems engineering tool is required

Education/Certifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering is required & 2 years of experience or 0 years with a MS.

  • Consideration will be given to candidates with a BS or MS degree in other engineering disciplines with strong relevant experience

  • Position can be filled at a higher level with BS & 5 years experience or 3 years and MS
