Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector is currently seeking an Agile Coach to join our growing team of diverse professionals. The preferred location for this position is on-site in Baltimore, Maryland; Rolling Meadows, Illinois; or San Diego California but part-time or full-time remote working may also be considered with expectations for travel as necessary to fulfill the duties of the position (up to 50%).

Summary of Role

This is a leadership role that leads teams and/or programs in their adoption of an agile mindset as demonstrated by the adoption and consistent use of agile principles, practices and most importantly behaviors.

The Agile Coach must be able to cultivate relationships with teams and program leaders and gain their trust and confidence as a Subject Matter Expert. The Senior Principal Agile Coach may support a variety of efforts to include initials situational assessments and team maturity state, preparation of a roadmap to mature a team, developing and facilitating workshops on a variety of agile topics such as story writing, story pointing, capacity planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives, continuous improvement, agile mindset, psychological safety, etc.


  • Laser focused on the objective of culture change, consistently confronting anti-pattern behaviors and modeling desired behaviors that drive culture change.

  • Active listener, highly in-tune with the full array of human communication (words chosen, tone of voice, body language, facial expressions) and skilled at quickly assessing and adjusting to the tone and style of any given conversation - especially those that are clearly going to be difficult and/or challenging.

  • Not easily offended, not prone to take difficult conversations personally. Can remain poised when confronted with difficult or challenging conversations.

  • Always prepared to manage the objections of skeptics in polite manner which moves conversations towards alignment/buy-in.

  • Architects delivery at scale using techniques such as program increment planning, Dev*Ops, portfolio management, agile product delivery, and business agility

  • Serves as a supporting member of the Agile Community of Practice, providing thought leadership and modeling a Lean-Agile leadership mindset


Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have one of the following:

  • High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 13 years of relevant professional experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline, Organizational Psychology, Change Management or something similar with a minimum of 9 years of relevant professional experience (7 years with MS degree; 4 years with PhD)

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of recent agile experience including implementing Agile principles and practices within DoD or Federal government or other high-compliance environment

  • Must have broad organizational change and transformation experience with concentration in the development of strategies, roadmaps, integration, implementation, and/or operations of complex, large-scale information systems and technologies

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance (or higher)

  • Must be able to travel as needed (up to 50% of the time)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An ACTIVE U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Secret security clearance

  • At least 4 years of experience leading teams in an Agile environment, including cyber-physical solutions, embedded development, and multi-team projects

  • Experience working with Scrum, Kanban, Feature Driven Development, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration & Delivery, Dev*Ops, Scaled Agile (SAFe) and XP

  • Direct experience with transitioning teams to Lean-Agile practices, including both individual teams and multi-team projects

  • Executed a minimum of four successful Program Increments (PI)

  • Participated in the planning, training, and execution supporting at least three Agile Release Train launches

  • Possess one or more of the following certifications or equivalent: Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC) , SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), Certified Scrum @ Scale Trainer, Certified Scrum Trainer (CST), Professional Scrum Trainer (PST)
