We are seeking a Material Physicist with a background in superconducting thin film materials and interfaces. The ideal candidate should have experience that includes some of the following:
Working knowledge in experimental design, materials research and development, and condensed matter physics
Prior experience with electrical transport, magnetometry, x-ray scattering, or electron microscopy
Cryogenic experimentation
Experience analyzing data from techniques mentioned above
Python and/or MATLAB experience/knowledge
Successful candidates are:
Excited about materials and interfaces in systems such as superconductivity, topological insulators, Weyl semimetals, interfacial phenomena.
Willing to contribute to materials R&D discussions and cross-coordinate with other teams to identify, build, complete and measure the resulting experiments.
Motivated to learn new technologies and technical skills
Able to identify problems, analyze data, and course correct experimental plans
Enthusiastic about working in a collaborative group setting
This position requires work on site located at our Advanced Technology Lab (ATL) in Linthicum, Maryland.
Your responsibilities:
Be a collaborative member of a team solving interesting questions
Plan and carry out experiments to investigate superconducting materials for use in quantum information
Analyze and share findings with colleagues having a diverse scientific expertise
Keep up to date with relevant superconducting materials in the literature
This position can be filled at the Principal level OR Sr. Principal level. Qualifications for both are listed below:
Basic Qualifications for Principal Materials Physicist:
PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field ( or will complete by December 2023); Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience; Bachelor's Degree with 5 plus years of relevant experience
Experience with thin film characterization, including techniques such as x-ray diffraction, reflectometry, or spectroscopy; electron microscopy (SEM/TEM/FIB/EDS)
US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements.
Preferred Qualifications for Principal Materials Physicist:
PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field
Experience with thin film characterization, including techniques such as x-ray diffraction, reflectometry, or spectroscopy; electron microscopy (SEM/TEM/FIB/EDS)
Background in superconducting materials, thin film surfaces and interfaces
Experience conceiving experimental designs to understand properties of thin films
Experience writing and contributing to version-controlled code in Python or MATLAB.
Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.
Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Materials Physicist:
PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years' experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant experience; Bachelor's Degree and 9 plus years' experience
Proficiency with thin film characterization, including techniques such as x-ray diffraction, reflectometry, or spectroscopy; electron microscopy (SEM/TEM/FIB/EDS)
US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS/SCI) with polygraph clearance per business requirements.
Preferred Qualifications for Sr. Principal Materials Physicist:
PhD in experimental physics, materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years' experience
Proficiency with thin film characterization, such as x-ray diffraction, reflectometry, or spectroscopy; electron microscopy (SEM/TEM/FIB/EDS)
Expertise in superconducting materials, thin film surfaces and interfaces
Familiarity with condensed matter physics
Experience writing and contributing to version-controlled code in Python or MATLAB
Active TS/SCI with polygraph clearance.
Salary Range: $120,900 - $181,300
Salary Range 2: $149,800 - $224,800
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
