The Advanced Technologies group of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking an independent, motivated and resourceful Defect Metrology Engineer for our Advanced Technology Lab (ATL) - located outside of Baltimore, Maryland - where we design, manufacture, and test semiconductor products for internal and commercial production customers as well as emerging technology programs.

Northrop Grumman's ATL semiconductor foundry is a unique capability supporting a range of production microelectronic devices (Silicon, Gallium Arsenide, Gallium Nitride, Silicon Carbide, Carbon Nanotubes) and providing leading edge technology development in superconducting electronics. Our multidisciplinary foundry team enables activities from development to sustainment process engineering. ATL is responsible for all aspects of semiconductor technology including design, mask making, wafer fabrication, test, and assembly. The candidate must be a strong team participant, have excellent communication skills, and be resourceful and multitalented. A strong understanding of semiconductor technology and metrology engineering is essential.

The Defect Metrology Engineer should possess some knowledge of defect metrology, defect detection techniques and practices. The selected candidate should have an aptitude for data analysis, technology development and demonstrate an ability to communicate well with others and work equally well independently and as part of a team.

The Defect Metrology Engineer will be responsible for but not limited to:

  1. Maintaining existing and developing new in-line defect metrology recipes and techniques for defect inspection and review tools.

  2. Assisting with ongoing efforts to integrate in-line defect metrology into our process flows

  3. Writing and maintaining process documentation

  4. Partner with vendors and equipment engineers to drive existing and future tools to meet foundry and program needs.

  5. Supporting statistical process control (SPC), continuous improvement efforts and the management and dissemination of metrology data

This job may be filled as a level 2 or a level 3 based on the qualifications below.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications for Defect Metrology Engineer:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or other related technical discipline with 2 years of relevant experience (0 year with MS)

• 1 year experience with semiconductor fabrication

• Basic knowledge of statistical process control

• Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance

Basic Qualifications for Principal Defect Metrology Engineer:

• Bachelor of Science degree Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or other related technical discipline with 5 years of relevant experience (3 years with MS and 0 with PhD)

• 1 year experience with semiconductor fabrication

• Basic knowledge of statistical process control

• Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in lean manufacturing practices and structured problem-solving methodology

• Data analysis and visualization (JMP)

• Experience developing technical specifications for equipment procurement

• Advanced knowledge of statistical process control (SPC)

• Hands-on experience with defect inspection and review tools (such as bright field, dark field, macro and whole wafer, bare wafer and review tools)

• Active Secret clearance
