Northrop Grumman Space designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

Job Functions:

  • Review and approval of engineering drawings, technical documents, bill of materials, materials and processes usage list.

  • Assist programs with Parts Selection and Control. Develop Materials and Processes Plan for programs based on customer requirements.

  • Materials analysis/characterization, failure analysis and cause-and-effects analysis as it applies to spacecraft systems/subsystems failure, anomaly, or non-conformance. Destructive and non-destructive analysis and investigative/troubleshooting work in the laboratory.

Qualifications:

This requisition may be filled at a Materials Engineer level or a Principal Materials Engineer level.

Basic Qualifications for Principal Materials Engineer:

  • Bachelor's Degree (STEM Degree) with 5 years of engineering experience; or 3 years experience with Masters.

  • Knowledge and experience with several metallic and non-metallic materials - steel, titanium, aluminum, composites, ceramics, polymers, organics. Knowledge of materials processing and treatment, such as, welding, brazing, forging, rolling, plating, anodizing, heat treatment.

  • Knowledge of failure analysis, root cause analysis, common failure modes, materials characterization.

  • Strong theoretical background on metallurgy, materials science, and some aspects of physics/chemistry.

  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and retain a security clearance.

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal Materials Engineer:

  • Bachelor's Degree (STEM Degree) with 9 years of engineering experience; or 7 years experience with Masters; or PhD w/ 4 years of experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with several metallic and non-metallic materials - steel, titanium, aluminum, composites, ceramics, polymers, organics. Knowledge of materials processing and treatment, such as, welding, brazing, forging, rolling, plating, anodizing, heat treatment.

  • Knowledge of failure analysis, root cause analysis, common failure modes, materials characterization.

  • Strong theoretical background on metallurgy, materials science, and some aspects of physics/chemistry.

  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and retain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory analytical equipment/techniques, such as, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, x-ray radiography, is a plus.

  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards, e.g., ASTM, AMS, NASA, Military, a plus.

  • Knowledge of materials and processes used in EEE parts, electronics packaging, and PWB manufacture, is preferred.

  • Active Top Secret.
