This is a combination role, part Portfolio Risk Manager and part Systems Engineer, located in Dulles, VA, supporting our National Security Space Systems programs. Over time, your amount of time spent on each set of responsibilities will fluctuate, and you will use your expertise in both areas to identify risk for satellites. This role's influence spans many other technical aspects at every level: the mission, the segment, and the component. Your work will span the entire program life cycle from early concept studies, design and development, system integration and test, launch and early operations, mission operations and sustainment, and system disposal. This is not just one program but multiple programs that range from small feasibility studies to medium-sized on-orbit technology demonstrations and to large-scale national systems.

Successful candidates will work in a senior technical role supporting development for a next-generation ground system. The program is considered to be a center-of-excellence for ground software development that is developing innovative tools to aid operators with planning spacecraft maneuvers and supporting vehicle activities, as well as monitoring mission progress and safety.

This combination Portfolio Risk Manager and Systems Engineer is responsible for the definition, planning, organization, direction, and control of risk and opportunity management, including the following duties:

  • Evaluate and approve risk and opportunity handing approaches

  • Create mitigation plans and approve opportunity exploitation plans

  • Coordinate with suppliers, vendors, higher-level managers, and external Customers on general risk and opportunity metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of the risk and opportunity management process

  • Assure integration of the Earned Value Management System (EVMS) with the risk and opportunity management process

  • Inform and advise higher-level management on critical project risks and mitigations

  • Facilitate team meetings and coordinate risks within the portfolio of programs

  • Lead business development and proposal teams through Acquisition Key Decision Point milestones within the risk and opportunity management area

Responsibilities include both individual contributor and leadership roles within a multi-disciplined engineering team. In this role, it is expected you will be self-directed, using previous experience to lead risk management. Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have U.S. Citizenship and active or current Top Secret and the ability to obtain SCI level access.

  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM or related discipline with 9 years of experience or a Master's Degree with 7 years of experience

  • 5+ years of space or satellite industry working experience

  • 7+ years of systems engineering experience

  • 2+ years of risk management/mitigation/documentation or related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using Scaled Agile Framework for software development and/or management

  • Demonstrated ability to lead risk management for complex space systems development, manufacture, test, or operations

  • Experience with ground software systems

  • Experience with a space development program

  • Experience presenting to customers

  • Experience working within a cross-discipline team
