This Lead Systems Engineer role is located in Dulles, VA, supporting our National Security Space Systems (NSS) programs that include technical roles at the mission, segment, and component levels. They span the entire program life cycle from early concept studies, design development, system integration/test, launch and early operations, mission operations/sustainment, and system disposal. Programs range from small feasibility studies to medium-sized on-orbit technology demonstrations and large-scale national systems.

Successful candidates for this position will work in a lead technical role, integrating several programs in one of the product lines in our NSS business area. This systems engineering (SE) role is responsible for leading the systems engineering technical team, which includes the following duties: systems analysis and trades, coordinating vehicle systems engineering activities, engineering baseline management, interface management, requirements/V&V management, subcontractor technical oversight, CAM/EVMS duties, preparing/presenting SE material at all major reviews and PMRs and interfacing with the customer and SETAs on all space segment technical issues.

The responsibilities include both individual-contributor and leadership roles, within a multi-disciplined engineering team. Successful candidates will also be called upon to support other activities including architecture studies, mission support, and traditional systems engineering functions. In this lead role, the Lead Systems Engineer is expected to be self-directed using previous experience to lead design, analysis, and execution efforts. Candidates must be able to recognize and mitigate technical issues and risks while operating within budget and on schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead/provide major support to multiple program technical teams within a product line

  • Lead and optimize space vehicle design, processing, and mission success

  • Troubleshoot and develop solutions to complex problems that the programs may encounter

  • Develop, author, and/or provide input to major program data products and other deliverables

  • Technical management of program elements

  • Planning and conduct of technical performance reviews and reports

  • Mentor, coach, train, guide, direct, and advise junior staff

The campus, located minutes from the Dulles airport, is the headquarters of NG's Space Systems Sector. The campus consists of seven buildings, with three bordering a green courtyard. Building 1 includes a cafeteria and a small gym for employee use. Across a stree is a Satellite Manufacturing Facility for integration and test of spacecraft, including environmental test chambers for TVAC, EMI/EMC, and Dynamics testing. Each building has adequate, adjacent parking. Along one side of the campus runs the paved Washington & Old Dominion Trail, which is popular for biking and running and can be used to bike to work.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to lead integration of complex space systems development, manufacture, test, or operations

  • Ability to lead a diverse multi-discipline engineering team

  • Previous systems engineering experience

  • Must have U.S. Citizenship with a current or active Top Secret level clearance.

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in STEM or related discipline plus 9 years of experience or a Master's degree in STEM or related discipline plus 7 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or active SCI

  • Experience with a space development program

  • Experience presenting to customers

  • Experience with Electrical Systems Engineering/electrical systems, integration & test, and/or space RF systems

  • Prior CAM or project management/project engineering experience

  • Desired experience includes one or more of the following: mission system requirements, verification/validation planning, mission planning/execution, mission analysis, modeling/simulation, system trade studies, and expertise with various engineering tools such as MATLAB, STK, etc.
