Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Staff Nondestructive Test (NDT) Research Scientist to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in Clearfield, Utah. You will be a part of an Inspection Development Group responsible for:

  • Development of advanced NDT inspection technologies and sensors including laser ultrasound, phased array ultrasound, air coupled ultrasonic, THz and GHz, thermography, shearography, digital x-ray and computer aided data analysis

  • Design, fabrication, installation and testing of automated inspection systems for internal use

  • Integration of advanced NDT inspection technologies into automated systems and their qualification for the production

  • NDT Support of production programs during their whole life cycle

Responsibilities include:

  • Initiate the design, development, execution and implementation of NDT technology research projects for inspection of composites

  • Investigate the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential NDT inventions and products

  • Define and execute NDT research tasks, analyzing data, publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting research at scientific conferences

  • Assist in formulation of long-term plans for NDT development at business unit

  • Plans and executes applied research

  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences

  • May participate in development of patent applications

  • May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts

Our team works in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations and significantly diverse assignments. We are comfortable both in a lab environment and on the production floor, and we collaborate closely with research scientists, NDT technicians, test engineers and quality control engineers, program and operation managers, and customers. We're a small group and a close-knit team. Our work is highly dynamic, and our activities will vary from project to project. Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in a relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 14 years of relevant experience; OR Master of Science in a relevant STEM discipline and 12 years of relevant experience; OR Ph.D. in a relevant STEM discipline and 9 years of relevant experience

  • Experience as a researcher in the development and implementation of new NDT methods

  • Must have an active DoD Secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation)

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a researcher in development NDT methods for composites

  • Experience as a researcher in NDT topics such as: Ultrasonic, Digital Radiography, Shearography, Thermography, GHz and THz, and X-Ray Computed Tomography

  • Experience in Ultrasonic Phased Array technology

  • Experience in NDT of composite materials for aerospace in manufacturing environment

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Effective team leadership and communication skills

  • Proficiency in preparation of research project proposals, in execution of research projects, and in project budget and schedule management

Salary Range: $139,000 - $208,600

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
