The Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division of Northrop Grumman's Space Systems sector seeks team members who want to solve interesting, complex problems which protect our nation. Northrop Grumman SYNOPTICS is the world-wide leader in the growth, fabrication, and coating of crystalline materials used in laser systems. These "solid-state" laser crystals are used in products ranging from medical lasers to military laser systems. The Charlotte facility has been operating for over 40 years in the laser industry and has developed the reputation of providing the highest quality products with timely deliveries. Within the facility, solid-state oxide and fluoride crystals are grown from a high-temperature melt. SYNOPTICS has full optical fabrication capabilities for various plano and spherical geometries as well as a class 10,000 square foot clean room for high-damage threshold thin-film optical coatings. In this role, you will be responsible for the complete Crystal Growth process from start to finish utilizing Manufacturing Process Documents to include:

  • Weighing and mixing raw materials

  • Preparing and building growth chambers

  • Operating crystal growth furnaces

  • Starting, monitoring and ending crystal growth runs

  • Harvesting and inspecting final crystal products.

Other duties include:

  • Maintain and operate all Crystal Growth machines and various support equipment

  • Maintain complete and accurate records of all processes related to crystal growth runs

  • Provide supporting labor to crucible cleaning operations

  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing team initiatives with supervisors and engineering

  • Participate in maintaining a safe, efficient, and clean workplace

  • Other duties as assigned by the area supervisor

Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Availability to commit to 3rd shift work schedule.

  • Experience with standard hand tools and measuring devices including calipers and rulers

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a frequent basis

  • Computer experience, ability to work with spreadsheets

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in a technical discipline

  • Mechanical aptitude and good troubleshooting skills

Salary Range: $36,900 - $61,500

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
