An organization within Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, SYNOPTICS is the world-wide leader in the growth, fabrication, and coating of crystalline materials used in laser systems. These “solid-state” laser crystals are used in products ranging from medical lasers to military laser systems.

The Charlotte facility has been operating for over 40 years in the laser industry and has developed the reputation of providing the highest quality products with timely deliveries.

Within the facility, solid-state oxide and fluoride crystals are grown from a high-temperature melt. SYNOPTICS has full optical fabrication capabilities for various plano and spherical geometries. SYNOPTICS serves the photonics and optics industry across the globe.

This position is onsite in Charlotte, NC. Hybrid/remote options are not available.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Identify new technologies to develop and implement automated manufacturing solutions related to crystal growth, optical fabrication, and thin film coating

  • Improve processes to enhance cost-efficiency, quality, speed, agility, and consistency

  • Lead improvement projects through all phases, including conceptualization, planning, design, manufacturing, in-house testing, documentation, and ongoing support

  • Work closely with technicians, department engineers, and supervisors to ensure project success

  • Further refine project scope and objectives under general guidance, exercising latitude in determining technical objectives of assigned projects

  • Conduct root cause analysis on process failures and implement corrective actions

  • Oversee capital equipment purchases when necessary, ensuring proper qualification, and develop preventative maintenance procedures

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience.

  • Strong technical expertise, work ethic, and passion for driving innovation through automation

  • Successful management of projects and processes involving multiple manufacturing areas or plants

  • Demonstrated ownership and attention to detail in project execution as well as initiative and self-motivation for learning and progressing projects to completion

  • Experience in a wide range of engineering skills related to manufacturing including:

  • 3D printing

  • Manual and CNC machining methods

  • 3D CAD modeling (Autodesk Inventor) and 2D CAD drawings for manufacturing with strong GD&T understanding

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years or more experience working in a manufacturing facility

  • Hands-on experience with designing, fabricating, and implementing mechanical or electrical systems

Salary Range: $75,700 - $113,500

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
