Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) seeks a Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer or Senior Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer in the Amherst Systems business unit within the Navigation, Targeting, and Survivability division.

The RF Electronics Engineering organization located in Buffalo, NY researches, designs, builds, and tests a variety of electronic components and systems used in the development, test, validation, and training of Electronic Warfare hardware, software, and personnel to ensure the safety and success of the warfighter.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced RF Engineer to join our team as a Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer or Sr Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer for large complex programs. The successful candidate will have a strong background in RF engineering, with the ability to run complex simulations, create complex RF schematics, source control drawings (SCDs), and block diagrams. Additionally, the RF Engineer will have a system-level understanding and experience, with strong test equipment and troubleshooting skills.

They will also be an effective collaborator in a team environment and possess the ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems to develop solutions.

What You'll Get To Do:

The Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer or Sr Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer will be reviewing and deriving technical requirements for complex RF systems and components, developing detailed block diagrams, and performing complex simulations using software tools. You will also provide guidance to junior RF engineers on RF designs, and direct junior engineers to test and troubleshoot RF assemblies/systems.

In addition, you will be designing RF IMAs (Integrated Microwave Assemblies) to support the product roadmap.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Act as the RF Lead Engineer for large, complex programs.

  • Run complex simulations using advanced software tools.

  • Create complex RF schematics, SCDs, and block diagrams.

  • Create new test procedures and methods as needed.

  • Provide solutions to a wide range of complex and difficult problems.

  • Solutions should be imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives.

  • Maintain frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contact.

  • Possess system-level understanding and experience.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex RF engineering issues.

  • Perform hands-on testing of RF systems and components.

  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure program success.

  • Continuously improve existing RF designs and develop new designs.

  • Participate in project meetings and provide regular updates on progress.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including test procedures, reports, and design documents.

  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers as needed.

Basic Qualifications Principal RF/Microwave Design Engineer:

  • BS Degree in a STEM field and a minimum of 5 years related experience or a Master's Degree in a STEM field and a minimum of 3 years experience.

  • Experience in surface mount RF design and multi-layer RF PWB design using striplines, coplanar waveguides, and microstrips.

  • Experience designing transitions between transmission line and RF devices.

  • Experience in filter design using lumped and distributed elements.

  • Familiarity with analog designs including op amps and drivers for RF components.

  • Expert knowledge on simulation tools such as ADS, HFSS and GENESYS.

  • Expertise in creating complex RF schematics, SCDs, and block diagrams.

  • Knowledge of test equipment and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Familiarity with RF communication systems, components, and architectures.

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • This position requires U.S. citizenship and able to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance if selected.

  • BS Degree in a STEM field and a minimum of 9 years related experience or a Master's Degree in a STEM field and a minimum of 7 years experience.

  • Experience designing transitions between transmission line and RF devices.

  • Experience in filter design using lumped and distributed elements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SME (Subject Matter Expert) in RF Engineering related topics.

  • Experience as RF lead on multifunctional teams.

  • Demonstrated capability to make difficult decisions that impact technical performance, program schedule and program budget.

  • Experience in activities related to Electronic Warfare systems development, use, testing and support.

  • In-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art RF components and test equipment.

  • Active U.S. DOD Secret Clearance.

  • Master's degree in engineering, Business Management, Engineering Leadership, or equivalent.

Salary Range: $77,200 - $115,800

Salary Range 2: $95,100 - $142,700

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
